Central Pennsylvania · web design for contractors
Most contractor websites lose the call before the page even loads.
We tested ten heating and cooling company websites around Harrisburg the way Google does, on a phone. Here's what we found, and what a site built for phones scores on the same test.
The test
- What
- Ten local HVAC company homepages, names left off
- How
- Google Lighthouse, phone mode, three runs each, middle result kept
- When
- September 2026
- Result
- 7 of 10 took more than 5 seconds to show their main content. Only 1 of 10 had nothing worth fixing.
| Site | Phone score | Content |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC #1 | 17 | 20.1s |
| HVAC #2 | 35 | 7.5s |
| HVAC #3 | 51 | 11.8s |
| HVAC #4 | 51 | 16.8s |
| HVAC #5 | 53 | 19.9s |
| HVAC #6 | 70 | 7.3s |
| HVAC #7 | 73 | 3.3s |
| HVAC #8 | 75 | 5.2s |
| HVAC #9 | 80 | 4.4s |
| HVAC #10 | 83 | 3.9s |
| Our example | 98 | 2.3s |
"Content" is how long the main part of the page takes to appear in Google's slow-phone test. Under 2.5 s is good.
What we look for, and what we do about it
Slow on a phone
People searching "furnace repair near me" leave before the page appears. Google ranks slow sites lower too.
Built to score 90+ on Google's own phone test.
Phone number you can't tap
On a phone, a number that isn't a link means copying it by hand. Many won't.
Tap-to-call in the header, the top of the page and a bar that follows you down.
No way to book
Someone at 11pm won't call. They'll book with whoever lets them.
A short request form that sends every lead straight to you.
Looks abandoned
A footer that says © 2020 or a broken photo makes people wonder if you're still in business.
Current, cared-for, and updated when you need it.
Google can't read it
Missing page titles, service area and hours mean fewer local searches find you.
Set up so Google knows what you do and where.
An example, built the same way
A demonstration site for a made-up heating company, so you can judge the work before we talk. Same test, same phone: 98 out of 100, live on the internet.
- → Prices listed up front
- → Call and book buttons that stay in reach on a phone
- → Checked on phone, tablet, laptop and large monitors

How it works
- 01
Free check
We test your site on phones and laptops and email you a one-page report. Plain English, no call required.
- 02
Fixed quote
One price, in writing, for exactly what we'll build.
- 03
You review it
You try the new site on your own phone before it goes live, and we change what you want changed.
- 04
Live, and looked after
We launch it, keep it fast and secure, and handle small updates.
Get the same test run on your site
Send your web address. You'll get a one-page report by email: your phone and laptop scores, what a customer sees, and what's worth fixing. Free, and no call unless you ask for one.
Questions
What does it cost?
It depends on the size of the site, so we quote a fixed price after the free check. You'll know the full number before anything starts.
I already have a website. Do I have to start over?
Not always. Sometimes the fastest win is fixing what you have. The free check tells you which.
Do I own the website?
Yes. The domain is registered to you and the files are yours. If you ever move on, you take everything with you.
Why were the ten sites tested anonymously?
The point is the pattern, not calling anyone out. If your business was one of them and you'd like your own numbers, ask.
